Credit Score Ranges in South Africa Explained (TransUnion, Experian, XDS) cover image

South African credit scores can be confusing because each of the four major credit bureaus uses a slightly different scale. This guide explains the ranges so you know exactly where you stand, and what to do next.

The four major South African credit bureaus

  • TransUnion
  • Experian
  • XDS
  • Compuscan

Most lenders pull one or more of these reports when you apply for credit, a bond, or a vehicle finance deal.

General credit score ranges in South Africa

While each bureau has its own scoring model, the common ranges are roughly:

  • 300 to 579: Poor, almost all credit applications will be declined. Likely indicates defaults, judgments or a debt review flag.
  • 580 to 669: Fair, some credit available but at high interest rates. Limited home loan options.
  • 670 to 739: Good, most lenders will consider you, with reasonable interest rates.
  • 740 to 799: Very Good, strong negotiating position on bonds and vehicle finance.
  • 800 to 850: Excellent, best rates available, fast approvals.

What credit score do I need for a home loan in South Africa?

Most major banks (Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank) prefer scores above 640 for bond approval, with the best rates typically reserved for scores above 700.

Why your score differs across bureaus

Not all lenders report to all bureaus. So your TransUnion score may be different to your Experian score simply because they have different data. This is normal.
