A strong credit score in South Africa opens doors, to home loans, vehicle finance, business credit, and even better insurance premiums. The good news is that improving your credit score is faster and more achievable than most people think. Here are seven proven steps our credit specialists recommend.

1. Pull your credit report (it's free)

Every South African is entitled to one free credit report per year from each bureau (TransUnion, Experian, XDS, Compuscan). Start by knowing what lenders see.

2. Dispute incorrect information

Errors are more common than you'd think. Old paid accounts still showing as outstanding, duplicate listings, incorrect amounts, all of these can be disputed. Our credit repair service handles disputes for you.

3. Settle small outstanding accounts first

Small unpaid amounts hurt your score disproportionately. Pay these off first, then request the bureau update, this can lift your score in weeks.

4. Bring revolving accounts below 30% utilisation

If your credit card or store card is maxed out, your score takes a hit. Bring the balance below 30% of the limit and your score improves quickly.

5. Don't close old accounts

The age of your oldest active account matters. Closing it shortens your credit history. Keep older accounts open even if you don't use them often.

6. Stop applying for credit while improving

Every credit application creates an enquiry on your record. Multiple enquiries in a short period drop your score. Pause new applications for 6 months.

7. Build positive history deliberately

Pay one or two small accounts perfectly for 6 months, for example, a store account or cellphone contract. Consistent positive history is what bureaus reward most.

How fast can you see results?

Most clients see meaningful score improvements within 2 to 4 months. Some have moved from 480 to 720 within five months with our credit coaching programme.
